Is veneajelu something tourists can actually enjoy, or mostly a local thing?
I have noticed the word veneajelu popping up more often when people talk about Finnish summers, especially around lakes and coastal areas. From what I can tell, it’s not really an “activity” in the usual tourist sense, but more like a normal part of everyday life in Finland.
What I’m wondering is how accessible veneajelu is for visitors. Do you need local knowledge or friends with a boat, or is it easy enough to experience on your own? Some travel activities feel great on paper but end up being complicated once you arrive, especially if you’re traveling solo.
I like the idea of veneajelu because it sounds simple — no tight schedules, no crowds, just being on the water and enjoying the surroundings. That’s very different from typical sightseeing tours. But I’m curious whether tourists actually get that calm experience, or if it depends heavily on where you are and how you arrange it.
